Upper Primary and Lower Secondary levels
Food Wrap, Tissue Paper, PVA, Decorative Paper e.g. Middle East Design, Paper, Beautex Paper, Buttons and Mould e.g. plastic drink bottle
1. Cover a mould e.g. plastic drink bottle in Plastic Food Wrap (Cling Film).
2. Water down PVA (60:40 mix) and dip torn Tissue Paper into the mixture and apply to the covered mould. Apply 4 layers of Tissue Paper to create the basic shape of a basket and set aside to dry.
3. Remove the mould and Food Wrap from the Papier Mache bowl.
4. Cut 8 x 2 cm strips of coloured paper and glue two of them end to end to create 4 long strips.
5. Glue these 4 strips overlapping each other at the bottom of the basket and spreading evenly around the basket shape.
6. Loosely pin the strips to the top of the basket.
7. Weave strips of another paper around the basket, gluing each strip as you work up the basket. Remember to alternate the strips going under or over the warp (vertical) paper strips.
8. Fold the ends of the warp (vertical) paper strips over to create loops at the top of the basket. Finish each loop off with a button glued to the centre of the loop.
Fold a piece of paper in half and cut a number of slits from the folded edge to 1 cm short of the opposite edge. Cut strips of paper in different widths but the same length as the width of the folded paper. Open out the folded paper and weave the paper strips through the slots, alternating the strips as you work up the sheet of paper. Glue the end of each strip to the edge of the paper.
