Magiclay Horse

Suitable for:

Primary levels

Materials:

Armature Model, Armature Wire 1.5mm, Paper Magiclay, Poster Colours Earth Palette, Leather Cord, Fabric & Hessian Threads

How to Make a Magiclay Horse:

  1. Create the basic shape of a horse using Armature Wire and a plastic Armature Model.
  2. Model Paper Magiclay over the armature to form the shape of a horse.
  3. Paint the model with Poster Colours and set aside to dry.
  4. Use threads of Hessian for the tail and mane. Tie a length of Leather Cord around the muzzle for the reins.
  5. Cover the horse in a piece of fabric for its rug.

150th Melbourne Cup - The Race that stops a nation

  • The greatest 3200 metre handicap horse-race in the world
  • Archer won the first Melbourne Cup 1861
  • While the Cup was first run on a Thursday, the race is always run on the first Tuesday in November and was first run on a Tuesday in 1875
  • Since 1877, Cup Day has been a public holiday for Melbourne, and crowds have flocked to the track.
  • A new grandstand was built at Flemington in 1924
  • Phar Lap is the only horse to have started favourite in three successive Melbourne Cups. He came third in 1929, won the race in 1930 and ran eighth in 1931.
  • In 2005, Makybe Diva made history by being the first horse to win the Melbourne Cup three times, winning consecutive races in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
