Cup Day Hat

Suitable for:

Primary levels

Materials:

Cardboard Hats, Shimmer Paint, Tissue Paper & Chenille Stems

How to Make a Cup Day Hat:

  1. Paint a cardboard hat with Shimmer Paint and set aside to dry.
  2. Cut a long strip of Tissue Paper and scallop one long side of the strip.
  3. Roll the scalloped strip around the end of a Chenille Stem to form a flower. Repeat this a number of times to create your flowers.
  4. Attach the flowers in an arrangement to the hat using a staple plier.

150th Melbourne Cup - The Race that stops a Nation

  • The greatest 3200 metre handicap horse-race in the world
  • Archer won the first Melbourne Cup 1861
  • While the Cup was first run on a Thursday, the race is always run on the first Tuesday in November and was first run on a Tuesday in 1875
  • Since 1877, Cup Day has been a public holiday for Melbourne, and crowds have flocked to the track.
  • A new grandstand was built at Flemington in 1924
  • Phar Lap is the only horse to have started favourite in three successive Melbourne Cups. He came third in 1929, won the race in 1930 and ran eighth in 1931.
  • In 2005, Makybe Diva made history by being the first horse to win the Melbourne Cup three times, winning consecutive races in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
