Dragonfly Activity

Paverpol Dragonfly

Suitable for:

Upper Primary/Secondary Levels

Materials:

Paverpol, Pavercolour, Armature Wire 1.6mm, Aluminium Foil, T- shirt material/Cotton, Jersey, Cotton Knit, Brush, Blocks of hard wood, Icecream containers, Popsticks & Satay Sticks

How to Make a Paverpol Dragonfly:

1. Use a length of Armature Wire approximately 2 m long to make a dragonfly body with four wings.

2. Wrap the armature figure with Aluminium Foil or recycled plastic bags. Roll a ball of Aluminium Foil to shape the head and secure this ball inside the wire loop. Add two small balls of foil for the eyes.

3. Use a Popstick to rub the foil smooth.

4. Mix the chosen colour of Pavercolour with a little water to a paste and stir into the Paverpol, making sure it is well mixed.

5. Dip strips of material into the coloured Paverpol, wring out the excess and roll the strip up into a roll for wrapping with ease, around the wire.

6. Wrap the form with wet strips of fabric to completely cover the wire. Start by wrapping the wings in wet fabric. Wind the strips very tightly around the frame.

7. Start from the tail with a strip of wet fabric and wind it around the body towards the head, completely covering the wire.

8. Use a piece of fabric approximately 10 x10 cm for the front of the head. Cut two slits approximately 3 cm either side in towards the centre.

9. Dip the material in the coloured Paverpol and stretch the fabric across the front of the face and eyes, leaving the four flaps to twist around the back of the neck and body.

10. Set the figure aside to dry when the frame is completely covered in fabric.

11. Attach the covered figure to a base that has also been completely painted with coloured Paverpol.

12. Decorate the dried form with Glitter or Vipond Paint.

13. Leave the figure indoors to cure for 3 weeks before leaving it outdoors to weather.
